Ideas needed

Okies, I'm learning the ropes of OGL (and I really should be learning Java considering I have an exam coming up :X) I first made a terrain renderer, which was okay, but really boring. So I was like "what can I make that I can waste time on?" Now, I'm a really simple person, so I made a really simple little game in ~4 hours, then realized I needed to write a font renderer to display the score. So, after 2 days of hammering out a hacked font "class", I finally have a demo to show, which I forgot to upload... arg. Download Windows Binary The problem is, the current object is to catch fruit to... increase the counter in the top-left corner. Which... is a little lacking. I'm looking for, essentially, ideas about where to go now. Not trivial things like "make different types of fruit" or "make a delay between the fruit appearing and falling" or "get a hot anime chick to hold the basket". I'm looking for BIG ideas on where to take this (but not BIG big, really just big). Some of the things I've got so far: - As points accumulate, increase in level (aka tetris), increase falling speed of fruit, throw in 'bad fruit', add high value fruit. Or something. - Timer & Quotas - you have a specific amount of time to gather a set amount of fruit. Go go gadget fruit collector. One of my "ever so far reaching ideas" was to create a set of arcady games and integrate them all together into one larger game, where all the games are, well, integrated. IE, a text-based RTS (ala Medieval Farmer 3) where you can... go to the farm and pick fruit? Okay, bad example. I've completely lost the point of this post. Ergo, make up a point and tell me things that I can do.

What are you using to learn OpenGL. And what IDE (and other APIs, ie: GLUT, SDL) are you using. Just wondering. Promise to play your game if you tell me ;).

How about some powerups that let you shoot/collect fruits when they are still at top, or create a duplicate basket that follows you, or larger basket, or sticky basket (insert more stolen idea from BreakOut here). Or fruits that falls in wave/circular pattern, or some angry bear that collects fruits too and eats your basket if you collect less than he did at the end, or an alien probing your fruits if you get caught in their beam.

I'm sorry - that was just too funny to not quote.

I'll put most of that in eventually.

Simple arcade games are key to learning a new language, API, whatever. Nicely done, Mushu. I'd say making the ability to have different game modes would be a great challenge:

  • Arcade - The fruit falls, you catch it. But watch out, they start to fall faster and more rapidly!
  • Puzzle - Catch only the fruit that mother wants, make different combinations to create interesting new ingredients.
  • Endless - See how long you can stay awake getting points.
  • ... Those are only some ideas to throw around.
