Does your brother know what he's doing? Put another way, is this your little brother messing around or is this your older brother blocking you for a reason?

Anyway, here are a couple urls

You mean that Windows won't boot because your brother's changed the folder permissions on the whole drive?

I'm a bit of a Win2K man myself, but this I find hard to swallow. Permissions usually affect individual users, and shouldn't prevent the OS from starting.

Any error messages you're getting on boot up?

I think I can help, but I need a little more information. I was going to say back up your data with Knoppix and reformat, but if your NTFS permissions have been changed that shouldn't be possible as you can't access the files.

What exactly did your brother do? Did he perhaps set the security options on drive C: to Deny for everybody?

he used the administrator account, and his goal was to hide san andreas from my parents
btw, he's 13, so dont expect him to know what he was doing

Two possible ideas I can think of:

Idea 1. Use BartPE to create and boot a live copy of Windows from CD, and run cacls that way.

Idea 2. This one's a bit extreme. Use a Linux LiveCD that has ntfsresize to make room for a 1 GB partition if you don't have one already, then install Windows there. Then use it to fix stuff in the other copy of Windows.

After you get things working again, don't give your brother admin access. If games fail to run, try giving only the game directory full permissions. I've found that to be sufficient in most cases.

i went in with knoppix and transfered all the important files to another comp on the network, then rebooted windows

I'm ethically torn because on the one hand there is a gamedev.net person in need, and on the other someone underage is attempting to hide GTA: SA from their parents. I've been posting that I think parents should take an interest in what their children buy, play and do and not go against the ratings system... so to help seems kind'a hypocritical.

Well I'm pretty sure it's fixable, but I think those ethics are nudging me to say no more.

Hm, this sort of thing happened to my laptop once, a long time ago. Somehow, from the BIOS, the disk got set to read only. Go figure. Check your BIOS settings. I'm not sure if that's a possibility or what.

paulecoyote: he was trying to hide cuz he was grounded and told no games period, not cuz of gta: sa's AO rating. my parents dont care about that shit, theyre not like mrs. lovejoy (KILL ALL LIKE HER, kids should not be sheltered from the world)

PnP Bios: the thing is, the permissions problem was not from the bios, the ACL in the NTFS partition were changed

boot from the windows installation disk and choose repair, and tell it to look at the filesystem.
