Wow, that kinda sucks. If it makes you feel any better, I'm on summer break, and while I was at the pool today, it rained a little [grin]...

Sorry. Seriously, that does suck though. Where do you work?

No there's not, there's a typhoon outside right now. You're in the wrong part of the world to be in a hurricane.

How often do typhoons hit you guys? In my experience, people in typhoon-ridden areas have a pretty good idea of when it is or isn't safe to be outside. If the businesses stay open, you're probably safe enough to go to them.

hmmm ok.... well yeah... typhoon... thanks for the correction..! I just wanted to say that its extremely windy and rainy outside.... on the way to work.. i saw signs and banners fall to the ground... very dangerous...

Typhoon hits Taiwan a lot... dunno why... of all the places on earth... it has to pick on the little island... There was one like a few weeks ago... Worst one recently was a few years back... the Nari... caused flooding like half of Taipei... and landslides which destroyed homes, not to mention the amount of people that didn't survive....

well you can never predict what will happen... like i said... the sign that fell down could've fallen on someone driving past... or even worse someone riding a bike... or walking... so if the government has announced the no work/no school alert... i dunno about others, my best choice is to stay home and not go out... its only one day... if I was an employer, I wouldn't risk my employees lives just so to cover the business loss of one day...

I'm an entry level programmer at a game company... I'm sure the "losses" of one day can be compensated by us working our ass off next week or just do some overtime....

"Literally" appears to have a different (and completely opposite) meaning in the USA to the UK. Or maybe they just misuse it more...

Fundamentally, there isn't any. They're the same meteorological phenomena (a very strong weather system characterized by a spiral pattern, a central eye, strong winds, and thunderstorms), just with different names. If it formed over the North Atlantic, the Northeast Pacific, or the South Pacific, it's a hurricane. If it formed over the Northwest Pacific or the West Pacific, it's a typhoon.

no, it means the same thing in the US. I don't know about Taiwan, though.

Heheh, I'm sure that subtle difference will be very interesting to fuchiefck when he is desperately hanging on to his keyboard to avoid being sucked into the vortex.

In the US, we often use literally to describe something that could be taken as a figure of spech or exageration. If it was a thunderstorm outside, I might say that it was like a hurricane as to exagerate. If it really was a hurricane, I would say it is "literally" a hurricane outside.

Of course, you can also use it sarcastically like "That guy was literally the ugliest person I ever saw", but that's the same concept.

It's like ironic, people don't grasp its true meaning.

Yes, if I were you, I'd now start to stack up cubicle walls in order to build a raft. Your keyboard might make a pretty poor oar, so you might want to craft one out of something else. Hope it blows over for ya though, mate, don't work too hard.
