Is there anyway to emulate the cell look with CSS+Divs? I've tried to make one work forever, but was told by someone that tables were the only way to achieve this.

Can you describe what you mean by the cell look?

Like in the gamedev forums or for any clean looking forum for that matter. Every element has a "cell," a surrounding box.

So ... borders? Just use lighter colours on the left and top.

The problem with that is, if the content of the cell exceeds its bounds, it wilil grow bigger while the surrounding cells that should be of same height stay the former height. I'm thinking tables is the only way to ahcieve uniform height throughout; I was just wondering whether or not there was a way to have a tableless forum (that is aesthetically pleasing).

I know how to develop tabless designs. What I'm looking for is something that emulates the TABLE tag via css.

Yeah, you'll be waiting a while for that one to become standard.. just use tables, they're not as bad as they're made out to be.

The question is: are you representing tabular data? If you are, then use tables. If not, then don't use the "cell look."

OK, so you're not trying to surround each element with a box. I agree with Michael, and also suggest re-examining the situation if IE 7 supports display: table-foo (which, at this point, seems conceivable).
