Does anyone know what software the gamedev forums use? It looks sort of like phpBB but not quite. mike http://www.coolgroups.com/forum

Custom-made. (And shame on you for comparing it to phpBB!)

What do you have against phpbb?

I have to say, though, I was looking at the source to phpbb yesterday, and it was quite ridiculous. I've never seen such unnecessary "if" nesting in my life. The login source wouldn't even print correctly in landscape mode.

phpBB needs to run everywhere, hence there is a ton of code to account for the fact that the PHP developers haven't heard of version compatiblity (The "magic quotes are on, magic quotes are off, magic quotes are on" version stupity is especially damaging to any attempt to make clean, compatible code).

If your PHP code only needs to run on your specific server, then you don't need to fill it with tons of junk (until another PHP level vulnerability is found and you're forced to upgrade, at which point your sysadmin screams at you because the PHP boys decided to change the documentated behavoir of a function just for fun)

I am not sure I have ever run across such clean, nice, un-bloated software like this.

With the exception of course of ASP-DEV (v2), which is what the GameDev forums where originally a rewrite of (though both have gone their seperate ways - GameDev has greatly expanded and undergone some change to the look [adding the bottom line and avatar box], and ASP-DEV has become ASP-DEV XM, which now looks like another phpBB clone)

Bob, how do you know it is un-bloated?

And, are you sure we shouldn't be saying "aye"? (which means yes)

I would assume he was refering to the interface. Compared to other forums, we've maintained a very clean, minimalist post layout that emphasises the message content (rather then some boards where it's a treasure hunt to find the actual message buried in the hundreds of stats, images and signatures)

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was American, or English speaking. Sorry.

I run punBB, it's very simplistic and easy to use forum software. Not very powerful, but very easy to understand. It seems to work well enough for what I need it for.
