I'm trying to buy a wireless notebook on eBay for $100 or less to use in Starbucks, and I'm having some trouble. I've been mostly bidding on Dells, but I think they might be overpriced. Out of the following brands: Acer Alienware AST Dell Fujitsu Gateway HP, Compaq IBM NEC Panasonic Sharp Sony Toshiba is there any that's really targeted to the value-conscious consumer? Basically, I'm looking for a notebook equivalent of eMachines. Also, on a bit of an aside, if you have a wireless card, can you plug an Ethernet cable into it? I'm wondering if I'll be able to use this thing at Kinko's. Thanks. mike http://www.coolgroups.com/

They certainly are (brand new ones in the UK, I'm thinking of). Not worth the money IMHO. The same with Alienware (again, you probably get a WAY better deal in the US than we do :( )

I'm looking at getting an Acer. Great all round spec that doesn't really break the bank. Of course I'm thinking from a "brand-new" perspective, you'll probably get it even cheaper on eBay.

You can get integrated wireless cards these days, and a separate Ethernet NIC in the same machine. So that shouldn't be a problem.

Dells overpriced? When I got my Dell I couldn't find a better deal anywhere else. Of course I was going for a high end new laptop in the US, though, and that could make a difference.

I've heard good things about Acer's latest machines, but if you want a solid and reliable machine, used IBM Thinkpads cannot be beat.
