Another laptop thread

Yes, it's another "I'm off to Uni help me choose a laptop" thread, I'm afraid. But I found this: Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M3438-G, gets rave reviews and seems to be fantastically reliable. # Intel® Pentium® M 760 2.0GHz (what does that roughly equal in terms of the P4? About 3.4Ghz?) # 1024MB DDR II # 120GB Hard Disk Drive # DVDRW Dual Layer # 17" WXGA+ wide Crystal View # Azalia codec 7.1 SPDIF Audio # 256MB nVidia Geforce GO 6800 # 802.11g Wi-Fi # Microsoft Windows XP Home My main concern is "How will it run BF2?" I think that's the most demanding software I have, I'll probably be running other games such as FarCry, Rome Total War, maybe older things like Simcity 4. I wouldn't mind a faster CPU, but to get a faster CPU with that setup means going to Dell or Rock, both of which are far too expensive. People in reviews say this machine I'm thinking of beats the Dell anyway. I'm guessing that if it can run BF2 at a good framerate with good quality graphics, it'll be fine for most things in the future. Do you reckon that laptop is "futureproof" in terms of the RAM and GFX card? I know it's got a 32-bit CPU, and people say AMD is better for gaming etc. etc. but I've always used Intel without any trouble, and they say the Turion isn't too good just now. And how well will this machine run BF2, do you think? Like I say, I'm assuming that if BF2 is fine (better than my desktop - P4 3.2Ghz, 512MB DDR, GeForce FX5200), just about everything else will be too. Any thoughts? How will BF2 and most "modern" games run in terms of quality and framerates do you think? Is it a good all-round machine? Thanks for your time, you're probably sick of threads like this, but you're such reliable, knowledgeable people I felt I had to ask you [smile]! ukdeveloper.

Well most notebooks aren't that "futureproof" at all. That machine looks quite nice and I'd say pick it up if you have the money. How big is that notebook? I assume you won't be taking it to class to type up notes?

I, like you, am going into Uni and am trying to get a future proof laptop. But for me, a 64 bit CPU is essential. Next year Unreal Engine 3 comes out, which is probably what I'll be working on for several years (environmental art and level design). It's been stated by Epic that the UE3 editor will require a 64 bit processor just to run. I don't need it to run fast, but I sure as hell need to support it. It's been a real disappointment to see Intel hold on to 32 bit for this long.

So the Turion ML-37 is what I'm trying to grab. Could you possibly provide where you heard that it's poor because that's an important issue to me right now. I haven't seen any reviews knocking it yet, but there's a lot to look through.

In terms of say, running BF2, that laptop should be awesome.

Here, there's benchmarks which seem to show a 2.13Ghz Centrino beating a similar Turion.
