It's real.

Shuttles are not planes, they can't 'fly' on their own, so if they need to be transported this is the way to do it. Sometimes the shuttle will have to land at a backup site because of bad weather or something else, and then needs to be transported back to headquarters.

It's been in the news this past week.

NOS! This thread must not die! I'm taking over around here!! I order you all to continue discussion of the shuttle. What do you guys think of shuttles riding atop 747's? How do you think this effects us as a game development community? What are some of the consequenses of using comercial aircraft to taxi around our spaceshuttles?

I WANT TO HEAR WHAT YOU GUYS THINK!

I wish nasa had more open source options for transporting space shuttles -_-

For some reason that picture looks fake to me. But I know nothing about the subject, so I'll have to take everyones word and beleive it's real.

I believe the pic is quite real. How else would they get the space shuttle half way across the continent? They certainly don't send it by truck...

That is indeed how they transport the shuttles. Can you think of a better way? [wink] See this article @ Wikipedia for more information.

If NASA can put a man on the moon they can certainly ferry a shuttle on top of a 747.

Noway true. A plane would be too heavy to ever lift from the ground. If humans were meant to fly, we would have wings.

Humans fly.. pft. Impossible, we are way too heavy.

Heh, knowing the transport method was real, my first instinct for some reason was to wonder about the silver cone on the back of the shuttle. Never seen one of those in the pics before, so I assumed that was what he was talking about.

Efforts to install the tail cone that protects the shuttle's main engines during the ferry flight home slowed the preparation work.
