Using HTML with GMail?

No more than a couple months ago, I was able to send and receive HTML email between me and others who use GMail. It appears they removed the feature. The tags are all visible now and have no effect, as if part of regular body text. And yet, MSDN is still sending me HTML newsletters, complete with text formatting and images. I don't know about GameDev, that newsletter is sent to my secondary email account on Hotmail. Anyways, is it still possible to send HTML email messages in GMail? If so, how? Otherwise, how can I at least embed images within the body of the email?

I can see the GDnet's newsletter's HTML in all its glory with my gmail account...

There will be a green bar with options like to allow the display of images. Hotmail has something like that too, you probably just toggled it on permanently.

Perhaps I'm just using my HTML wrong? How is using HTML in email different from using it in making a web page?

I ran a little experiment, and it shows that outgoing HTML email from GMail does not work, but outgoing HTML from Hotmail does. I typed exactly this into the email:

<html><body><font size=7 color=red>This is big red text</font></body></html>

When I sent this from GMail to Hotmail, all the HTML tags were visible and no transformation were made. When I sent the same message from Hotmail to Gmail, I got what I wanted to see -- big red text. Also, from Hotmail to Hotmail works with HTML, but Gmail to Gmail does not. Basically, one conclusion -- any HTML messages originating from Gmail do not work.

So perhaps this is an issue of my usage? Is HTML done differently in email? Or did Gmail simply remove the feature?

Create a new .htm file, create your email in that. Open it in IE, copy and paste the text from it into GMail (click "Rich Text" first). It should work.
...or just use a decent email client.

You can type all you want: if the MIME type of the message is "text/plain" rather than "text/html" you're not gonna see HTML.

GMail's web site will change all of the > and < to & gt; and & lt;
This kind of screws over your chance of writing HTML. I think they want you to use their rich formatting service instead.

Follow benryves advice.
