Is there any way to use FF while doing the windows valiation? I can get my number(downloading the app), then it tells me that my browswer cannot run the activeX control needed by it, and to please download this .hta (i think thats the extension). I'd rather it just have it work like it does in IE. Anyway for this to work? BTW, i'm using FF 1.0.6

Would it kill you to open IE for 5 seconds? Honestly.

But, it should give you an executable file that you can run, and paste a code in. Never seen any ".hta" file.

It can't work in Firefox the way that it does in IE because Firefox doesn't natively support ActiveX controls. There's an extension around for it somewhere (windows-only, natch).

For me, the problem with that is that I have IE locked down so hard (all security settings to maximum) that it's pretty much unusable for anything. (I did this because I'm worried about IE starting up as a control in some other program, and then one of IE's "flaws" biting me in the ass.)

So whenever I have to use IE for something, it's really annoying to change all those settings and then change them back.

If you can, just use IE. Otherwise, I don't think it will really work. You shouldn't run into any troubles with just having IE open for a minute or 2. Once it's finished, you can go back to Firefox.

Have they removed the small exe file that they had in the beta period? You could download it, let it validate the computer and enter the number it gives you into a text box in the browser to let you continue...

This is probably far more work than it's worth, but you could set IE to shift into a different security zone when visiting windows update, a zone where activex is allowed.

Why not just let it download the alternately suggested file ('.hta or whatever') and see what happens?
