I personally think that Windows Vista is going to be horrid. I have some screenshots of it, and it is not appealing. I will not post them since it is against Microsoft's thingymerwautsy. Anyways, there is going to be a bar on the right side of the screen, and they are getting rid of OpenGL from what I heard. I wish that Apple could have put more effort into the hardware and not just the software, then Microsoft would have had some competition! So, you can check out the Developers' Network at Microsoft for more info. I am not really sure if they are going to intergrate 64-bit processors or not, but I hope they do.

I've only seen the bar-on-the-side thingummy in the really old screenshots. Personally, I think it looks rather spiffy.

Well, they haven't distributed any OpenGL driver since Windows 95 or so. Every single video card manufacturer still does though.

I thought that at the OpenGL homesite they said Windows was only going to support DX.

Cue post after post about how MS is screwing everything up, how we should have never left Win2k, etc etc.

So you're criticizing a development build of an unfinished product you haven't seen based on assumptions you aren't sure about?

this "They aren't supporting OpenGL" shtick is a good bit of propoganda from the OpenGL crowd. Yes, it's true, windows vista is not including support for OpenGL. But neither did Windows XP, 2K, 98, etc. ad nauseam. No, windows is not including support, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to develope in opengl, your video card manufacturer will still release drivers like they always have.

and yes, opengl apps will have a significant performance hit over directx apps. again, this is because windows doesn't have the "support" for opengl that it does for directx. Now, add the video card manufacturer's drivers and opengl will be plenty fast.

It's just dumb knee jerk reactions.

Very interesting. I will check out the site a little more often.

Continue to support OpenGL ICDs

In other words, initally to get full openGL, you will have to use a non LDDM driver, and it will have to disable the new directX based desktop while doing so, but in the future, graphics card manufactureres will be able to incoperate their own ICDs into LDDM drivers. Simple. It is supported. The driver that comes with windows, compared to the one in XP, is going to be a lot better, OGL 1.4 instead of 1.1, and actual hardware acceleration (even if it's emulated) - Whats the problem with that?!

Personally I like what they are doing with Vista. Sure it's not everything it was initally going to be (which is a shame), but it's still going to be a significant improvement over XP. Just remember beta 1 of XP was rubbsih and did virtually nothing new, Beta 1 of Vista is a significant improvment as it is...

As for looking bad? well thats just taste. I'm sure there will be other style that come with the OS for you to choose, and I *guarentee* that within a week or so there will be third party styles avaliable.

Ohh and that article says beta 1 is already noticably faster than XP.... and it's more than likly mostly debug code

I think that it will be alright. It will be good if you can turn down the features if you have a lower end pc. I like the UI and everything. I just want to see how many processes it will have and what resources it will use up.

Gamedev OpenGL on Vista info center. Not only is OpenGL support not decreasing, they are apparently *increasing* support to 1.4 from 1.2.

So is this Longhorn, or is it some other version they are coming out with?

Please fill me in, I haven't had my daily dose of IT news lately :P

Or bi-monthly, as the case may be. [grin]

Yep, they're one and the same.

So does anyone have an idea as to what monitor resolution it is going to support? From the screenshots, it looks like 2048x1536 or something near that

The product name was never Longhorn. Unless you regularly refer to your version of Windows as "Whistler" (the project codename for XP - Microsoft uses city names for their OS projects, i.e. Chicago[95], Daytona[NT 3.5], Memphis[98], Detroit [95B] and Nashville[Originally 96, but changed into the free IE4 active desktop/quicklaunch bar/misc upgrade for 95]).

I'm not terribly interested in it. Most of the features they've debuted aren't very important to me and certainly don't justify the cost of upgrade. However, some of the laptop specific features I read about a while ago did seem quite interesting and important, so if I do get a new laptop I'd use Vista (although it's not like I have much of a choice anyways :P)

The main reason I want the OS is for DirectX 10 when it is released, as it is completely rewritten and I've been looking forward to it for a long time now :)

I love that how on this picture it has Mozilla Firefox on the start menu.

Fair play to Paul!

The only thing I'm truly worried about is DRM is supposedly going to be much tighter. And i know it won't be taken care of, but i wish they would fix the horible system in place for installing apps (I think that with the WinFX filesystem they could do it to, but thats for another rant). As for appearance that doesn't bother me, I thought Luna was appaling anyways, windows classic is nice and clean. And X64 version will be seperate, just like XP (hopefully by next round they can just say upgrade and only support X64)
