Bread!

Original Post
My favorite food is bread. Yes, bread. I'm so happy that the whole Atkins thing finally blew over. I've been know to sit down and eat a loaf of Italian in one sitting. Now I know there are some of you out there from all parts of the planet. What kind of bread am I missing that they make where you are? Am I the only one who like bread this much?
Weird, I actually had a very strange dream about bread last night. I dreamed that I had aquired a very sweet tasting loaf of wheat bread and I ate the whole thing. it was good.
Yes, yes, bread is good.

Finland has a dark (rye?) bread that's fairly dense, and I haven't found a similar type here. It's not my favorite, but it goes well with a slice of raw salmon on top.

Funny you mention that, I was just talking to a person in this flat about bread in the US. I come from new zealand. I'm in the US for a couple more months, finishing off a project. Needless to say there are lots of differences I've noticed, and one has been the bread.
Thing is, everything over here seems to have added corn-syrup. In other words, added sugar. It's something that has really surprised me. Bread especially. When I go into the supermarkets here, half the bread literally looks like cake to me, it's amazing the amount of added sugar.
Of all the breads at the local supermarket I go to most often, in the *entire* isle, there is *one* single brand of bread that doesn't have added sugar. (I think it's called crater lake or something).
Back home the breads arn't all that different. Mostly more brown and wholegrain breads, but very very few have any added sugar, and none to the extent over here. So you would probably find our bread quite boring, where as I find the bread here very difficult to eat.
The other thing is price, back home you can get a budget loaf for 80c (50c US), and a fancy one for $2 ($1 50c us), here I've seen loaves of bread upto $5-6. and few below $3. The loaves here are heavier for their size, but ours back home are bigger. US bread also has more presevatives, etc.
It's been really interesting in a random sort of way seeing the little differences like that. And ironically it's meant I'm eating much better, as I have to be very careful of what I buy now.

Bread is the greatest invention since sliced bread. Or maybe even before. With just flour, water, and yeast, plus whatever you can afford to add, you can have something to eat for practically nothing. Fry it and serve with syrup like a pancake. Or cut that in half and apply jam or whatever you want like you would toast. Or flatten it and apply butter sugar and cinnamon, roll it up, bake it, and make cinnamon rolls. Or just bake it normally, slice it up, and make a sandwich. Yep, bread is good. And if you're stuck in the middle of nowhere, you can wrap it around a stick and cook it over a fire. Although to be honest I'm not sure where you'd find the flour and yeast in the middle of nowhere.
Being type 2 diabetic, I'm technically on doctor's orders to eat as little bread as possible. :/ That aside though, I've had lots of good breads.
My favorite is probably Swedish Rye Bread. This is a sweet, heavy, dense rye bread usually baked in round loaves. It contains caraway seeds (addictively yummy in any brown bread!) and the sweetening is molasses and brown sugar.
Italian Bread is annoying because there are many different types all called Italian Bread, some much better than others. The kind I am thinking of is very soft, heavy, pure white inside, crust isn't crispy at all, and the bread has an almost creamy texture, not the rough, bubble-filled texture Italian Bread usually has. Best if eaten warm with butter.
Other breads that are wonderful eaten warm with butter (but not necessarily good at room temperatire) are Sourdough Bread, Cornbread, Hawaiian Sweet Bread (this is another bread where lots of varieties are confusingly all called the same thing, but the one I am thinking of is a potato bread containing lemon or pineapple juice), Pan de Leche, buttermilk biscuits, and scones (preferably the soft biscuit-like ones).
For putting spreads like cream cheese or peanut butter and jelly on I prefer bagels or soft oatmeal bread.
For sandwiches the airier, less sweet breads like sourdough or marbled rye often combine better with spicy mustards and sharp cheeses than the sweeter heavier breads I usually prefer.
And finally, they probably don't count as bread but I love pound cake, muffins, and brownies.

I also like the rye bread that finnish people eat, but my favorite bread is warm french bread.
My younger brother is convinced that if he killed a finnish person and opened up their stomach, he'd find rye bread inside.
Yeah! now that you mentioned prices, I was floored yesterday when I went shopping and noticed that the cost of bread was $5-6 at a nearby store!!! A couple years ago, a loaf of bread was $0.99! I'm a starving student, aka, penny pincher. I'm starting to wonder how much more effort it would take to make my own bread.

Garlic bread...on its own, or with chicken.
Mainly whites I eat...
hehe, I kinda knocked something up quickly: Link.
Its a 'thing' for bread fans...er...yeah, only took 6mins to do though.
Could become an encyclopedia of bread...

Danish Rugbrød, mmmmm
I prefer dark bread since it's more consistent. It must have seeds in it too.
Haha, I was going to mention it, but you beat me to it. [wink]
