I've tried posting this in the technical forums in the past and haven't really been able to get a great answer, so i'm hoping maybe you lounge-lizards will have a good tutorial sitting around somewhere. I'm interested in "picking," but specifically using DirectX commands. I would like to see an entire listing of different ways of doing it, with code examples that use the DirectX (8-9) api. Anyone here able to help me?

Picking is basically telling what the mouse is hovering over in a 3d program.

I have a 3d rendered land grid, and I want to be able to tell which block the mouse is over when the user clicks.

In one of the older SDKs (8?) there were two demo apps - one had a spinning tiger that you could select a single triangle from, the other had a car engine that would identify which mesh (and thus part) you'd clicked on.

I've figured out that much..but I am still confused. As far as I can tell, that works if the meshes haven't been transformed. The thing is, obviously it has been transformed several times, so how would I go about testing blocks all over the screen?

You can transform the pick ray by the inverse of the transform of the mesh.

We try to keep the lounge out of the technical forums. Please keep the technical questions out of the lounge. If you didn't get an answer in the DX forum, maybe that was because your question was unclear or the answer was obvious and only required that you do some research for yourself.
