perhaps some context for this image?

Famous angry fellow running around in public with a loaded weapon. A person who have been in jail, he is violent and have even been shooting at helicopters trying to take photos of him in the past. Maybe not the kind of guy you would want running around with a loaded gun?

He got famous playing a borderline retarded highschool student (Jeff Spicoli) in the 1982 teen movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". Now he thinks the world owes him respect and we should adopt his opinion on everything. Basically he has an ego bigger than Hurricane Katrina.

BTW, he's a good actor, but a horrible director. I saw him on an HBO special about movie editing talking about how he likes having the principle actors in the editing room, a no-no for any director that values his/her work. Just watch any movie directed by him and you'll see (The Pledge, The Crossing Guard). He's been fortunate that actors he has directed aren't as narcissistic as he is.

Well that concludes this episode of "Bash Sean Penn". Join us next week as we discuss his prison record. [smile]

Some of his movies are must see if you get out from under that rock, especially Dead Man Walking, Casualties Of War, 21 Grams and The Assassination of Richard Nixon.

Dead Man Walking is good. Everyone should see that.
Hope I was helpful. And thank you if you were!

Great actor, but make sure to avoid I Am Sam!

Penn in New Orleans? Whatever you think about him politically, at least he's there trying to make a difference. Not sure if he's helping, but he's trying.
You either believe that within your society more individuals are good than evil, and that by protecting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible, or you believe that within your society more individuals are evil than good, and that by limiting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible.

If he wanted to make a difference, he could actually spend some of his millions bringing in real rescue crews, instead of bringing him and his photographer in on a little itty bitty paddle boat (which sprung a leak) to "rescue" people.

Actors need to quit using their fame as a soapbox for their political views unless they actually want to make the move to politics.

He's there trying to boost his approval ratings, nothing more than that. Same with most every celebrity there. They spend more money making sure their activities there are publicized than on the aid they're actually trying to offer.

Absolutely. Sean Penn is great. He makes me proud to be an American. That the wingnuts hate him makes it all that much better.

Here's something to condsider. The wingnuts talk a lot about individuals taking the initiative and so on. But when someone they don't like, someone with the economic wherewithal to directly engage the problem does so, they bad mouth him down for it. They say he's grandstanding and so on. Meanwhile, when President Bush stages photo-ops in the middle of a disaster, these same yahoos remain silent.

Three examples.

A German TV crew reported that in Biloxi on Sept. 2, the President's visit was completely staged. Emergency crews appeared shortly before Bush arrived to set up a food distribution point and broke it down immediately after he left and the tv camera crews began to disperse. I no longer have the url to the German article, so this will have to suffice: German TV Report on Bush's Biloxi Visit.

The Salt Lake City Tribune reports that fire fighters brought in from out of state as part of the disaster response were redirected to distribute flyers (Frustrated: Fire crews to hand out fliers for FEMA). But as specific orders began arriving to the firefighters in Atlanta, a team of 50 Monday morning quickly was ushered onto a flight headed for Louisiana. The crew's first assignment: to stand beside President Bush as he tours devastated areas.

Levee repairs made during Bush's first visit to New Orleans were halted as soon as he left and his visit was harshly criticized as a photo-op. Bush 'photo-op' visit slammed.

[blah blah blah...]

Bashing Bush at every opportunity doesn't make you cool or "different," you know.

The fact that the President showed up when he did may have been "nothing more than a photo op," but, just think of it, if the president was coming to oversee operations where you work, don't you think you'd have the inspiration to pick up the pace a little?

Think of it like a board game, you have a little "Presidential" figure who raises morale for people in a five mile vicinity. That may be the only goal his figure piece has, but at least it does something. And what would you rather have Bush doing? Being in New Orleans and working his ass off to make sure a few extra people lived, or being in Washington where he can at least attempt to oversee the large-scale rescue efforts so that thousands more can live?

Sean Penn is a big-time actor, and he has a similar effect, but what Sean Penn could have been doing is using his millions of dollars to coordinate more of a large scale rescue effort than him bringing along his photographer in a row boat that was of such high quality that he ended up having to do the whole "grab a bucket and make the flooding go away" maneuver to make sure the boat didn't sink. When Sean Penn leaves, he's gone. He'll probably go back to filming whatever movie project he's working on. When President Bush shows up and leaves, he's going to do his best to coordinate rescue efforts in a large scale way.

And the bit about the "yahoos remaining silent?" Please. People clamor for the ability to badmouth Bush whenever he screws up.

Quote:

PRESIDENT

Effect:
Troop morale +5

Side effects:
When used, all friendly units are moved to the president for protection and will be out of game for three rounds.

Negative effects will still be effective on surrounding areas and friendly units.

;) Sorry, carry on.

I could have swore that you said Bush should "Be a leader" which means to some degree being seen. Bush wasn't there claiming to help. Penn was. If you're really coming to help why bring your personal photographer and a tiny boat that can barely carry the people you brought to help you, especialy when you have the means to do otherwise.
