Hi, I have a 8Mb adsl connection, and a Linksys WRK54G router. However, when I'm installing the router thru the cd... theres a point where it asks me to go to the TCP/IP Properties (in Network Connections... im under winxp btw) and select Obtain an IP address automatically... however I had defined a bunch of IP addresses for my adsl modem to work... And doing what Linksys asks me to do I get no connection... Any help? Huge thanks

For your DSL modem, is it assigned the IP's? Or did you recieve a list of IP's that you can use?

If you recieved a list (list may have only 1 IP on it), than take one of the available IP's (since your modem might take up one) and put that into your WRK54G instead of having it pull it dynamic. Depening on your provider, you may also have to setup PPPoE. On your router, set it up to be a DHCP server. Once that part is complete, you can set your computers to be connected to it and to Obtain the IP automagically.

If you did NOT recieve a list, than your modem may or may not get its address from the provider and the router may have to be setup to "dial" into the provider.

Im making a few assumptions because each provider is different. But generally speaking, this should not be too far off.

I believe I'll need a bit more help with this... :( as I haven't been able to configure it correctly... so... here is what I'm told to do to configure my ADSL connection:

- Go to Properties of TCP/IP
- Write an IP address (provided)
- Write a subnet mask (provided)
- Write a defined gateway (provided)
- Write preferred and alternate DNS servers (provided)

- In "Wan Type" select "PPP"
- In "Connection Type" select "PPPoE"
- In "VPI/VCI" put 0/35
- In "Default Route" select "Enabled"
- Write the user name and pass
- In "Use DNS" select "Enabled"
- In "Max Idle Time" select "Always On"

Now, my question is this: how do I set up my Linksys WRK54G router ?

Huge thanks

Ok, so they gave you a static IP. That is a good start. Next question is whether your ADSL modem has a built-in firewall (doubtfull but posible) or if it is just there as a connection point. Eg: If you plug directly into the router with windows setup to automagically obtain information, can you connect to the Internet?

Since I'm not seeing any of that on my tcp/ip screens, I am going to have to ask if you have the "Advanced Networking Pack for XP" (I think that is what it is called) installed or not. Also, if you don't have that installed, is that what is on the modem's internal web server?

Depending on above question decides how we do this one. If when you plug the computer into the modem and make your settings to auto obtain, then setting the router up is quite easy. Otherwise, we have to change alot of the default settings.

Hmm...just took a closer look at the orginal statement. In the WRK54G settings, put what was givin to you in the same places in the router's settings as you did locally. Also note, in order to do this, you will have to set your computer to auto obtain when connected to the router. (make sure the modem is plugged into the WAN port on the back.) If you did NOT setup a PPPoE connection in Windows, you should not have to set one up on the router.

However, if you did setup a PPPoE Connection in Windows, find the corrosponding fields on the router and put them there. The instructions givin with these routers are usually for the basic of connections (eg not an ADSL one).

I'll see if I can find an example on Linksys's site that may better illustrate what I am saying.

HTH,
Richard

EDIT: I found this which might help some.

those wan type and connection type settings are in the modem settings page.
So... what do I put in the TCP/IP properties then? Obtain IP dinamically ?

thanks again

Alright. On your XP computer, while plugged into the WRK54G, set it to obtain automatically. In the WRK54G, set it with all the settings that your provider gave you (in WAN of course). The local network settings(or however they termed it) on the router should not need to be changed. After all the settings are in and saved, look under the Status page and see if it is connecting, connected, or disconnected. If connected and are able to get through GREAT!!! If not, there is a settings conflict either on the router or on the computer.

Remember, if you don't recognize a settings on the router, the help files on it are half way decent.

Like rjhcomputers said these are now going to be the settings for your router. Your computer, will now be on a local network (instead of being directly connected to WAN) and it will now obtain its local IP address and settings from your router, so you need to tell your computer to obtain them automatically from your router.

Argh!! its still not working... here is what I'm doing... this time with the Linksys WRK54G cd:

- After the autorun, i hit setup, and it starts checking my internet connection;
- Then it asks me to connect the linksys to the modem and to the computer;
- I'm asked to go to the TCP/IP properties and select "Obtain IP automatically"
(btw, the DNS server addresses should be obtained automatically too, or not?)
- Then it asks me to input the IP Address, the Subnet Mask, the Default Gateway, and the DNS Server Addresses;
- Then, it configures my router
- Checks my internet connection
- And............. BANG! Could not connect!!

its starting to get on my nerves :(

Huge thanks... once again

If it means anything, you ARE getting closer. The DNS settings on your computer should also be setup to obtain automatically.

Did the setup cd ask for any login information? If your ADSL service requires a PPPoE Connection, then you still have a few additional steps to take.

yes... it does require authentication, but after the failed try to connect to the internet by the router setup, it doesn't let me go any further...
My service does require a PPPoE connection... what else do i need to do?

Alright, assuming you can talk with the router (type in 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 into a browser and you should get to the router.) if it asks for a user password, it is probably still the default user: admin/password: .

On the router screen, the link I posted earlier should help. Basically, filling in the user information, password, and changing the type from "no login" to "PPPoE".
