I don't know if this is how technogoth is doing it, but a standard way to do it is to convert the ranking (e.g. 3rd) into points (3), add up all the points for each entry, and the one with the least points wins, the one with the second-least points comes in second, etc.
That's the approach that I think makes most sense in this competition; there won't be enough votes to do something like instant run-off. I suppose the game designer in me just likes to know the rules [wink].
I'm feeling a bit guilty about the way I voted, since I think I skewed my preferences towards the entries that I'd like to see continue in the competition, and less so on writing style or specifically following the rules. I'm not sure whether that's the most impartial way to judge something like this!
Well, that's the benefit if having lots of people vote, their biases probably cancel each other out, and if they don't you can call that bias the 'vox populi'.
I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.
I know you probably don't like a newbie asking this, but it's probably too late to throw an entry in, right? I've read several of them (I'm on dial-up so it takes like two minutes just to download one of 'em) and I think that my story, "The Great Rebellion" would fare well in the competition.
Are any of you guys going to the Game Writer's Conference in Austin? (Don't worry, I'll check the thread to see if that topic's been posted elsewhere.)

Yes it's too late, and anyway only stories newly-written for the competition may be entered. But you may enter the new competition starting on Friday if you write something new for that, and submit it anonymously, as per the rules.
Also, the URL in your signature is too long and is making your posts overflow the side of the screen, please fix that. :)

Always without desire we must be found, If its deep mystery we would sound; But if desire always within us be, Its outer fringe is all that we shall see. - The Tao
*raises eyebrow* I'd like to point out that I write more science fiction than fantasy.

Well each of the 4 critera is given a score out of 10 and the winner is the one with the highest average score. For the popular vote I put the sum of all the votes into a little equation and arrive at score between 1 and 10. Currently a 10 means everyone ranked the entry as number 1 however I might change it so that they are normalized against the most popular entries score. Which means that most popular entry would score 10 points and all other entries would have a score based on how close to the most popular they where.

I'm not sure if I fully understand that. I understand that a 10 can represent an entry that everyone puts at number 1, but in that case what would an entry that everyone puts at number 2 get?
By the way, thanks for running this little competition! I'm looking forward to seeing the entries for the next round.

Okay, but what about sci-fi/fantasy hybrids such as "Star Wars?" Is that a mutt or is it possible to have the best of both worlds? (I vote for the latter, personally.)
