Face transplants...

Is that for real ? Quite disgusting.

Even if I was disfigured, I would think twice about that. Tissue regeneration or cell cloning using your own DNA would be much safer and cleaner way. Think about the immune rejection reactions you'd have with a transplanted face ! These are serious business for patients with kidney, lever or heart transplants (and note that those are vital organs). You'd have to take immune blockers for the rest of your life, with all the possible damages they can do.

It'd be funny when your body rejects the new face and it peels off, thus leaving you with no face.

Urg. That's nasty. Not much more you can say to that.

Even in the event that the tissue isn't rejected, your bone structure is a big factor of what your face will look like, and it's very likely that the face won't match the structure.

I wouldn't want someone else's face. Imagine meeting the parents of the guy whose face you now have:

Pee and Em: Son, is that you?! We thought you died!
You: Uh, no. I just got your son's face after he died.
*Pee and Em have simultaneous heart attacks and keel over.*
You: Pwnt.

Creepy stuff. Really. I'd assume that they'd match stuff like bone structure, but it's still some other guy's face that you're using. But if you were in a situation where you needed it [ie horribly disfigured anyways] then I guess that's alright...

And the whole face melt thing, if the transplant is rejected. hmmm...

It will look pretty horrific anyway, like some serial killer trying to wear someone else's skin, or at best, something from the old Mission Impossible series. I don't think the skin / tissues will bind quite right with whatever's left underneath (muscles, bones). Might be a bit of a stretch. It's not like skin transplant to an arm or a leg, the muscle mass underneath is very complex.

I don't know the biologics of it, ... but desperate situations require desperate measures. If you have no face to begin with, why not. But that will have to be done for very extreme cases.

I would not want to be the one to tell her that there might be a chance that she gets a somewhat better life, but she can't have it because its icky or unethical.

I read few months ago about facetransplants and that "they" try to get them banned because they are immoral and unethical in general, because of respect to the previous owner of the face and/or relatives.

I give thumbs up, as long as it helps people that NEED it. Not for some stupid cosmetical trend in hollywood.
