Im always back with another computer issue. This one is just inconvienient, not crippling for the most part. My sound card doesn't work anymore. I had a thread awhile ago about my comp's HDD shitting out on me and when you guys helped me through it the only problem was that upon startup it didn't have any sound. Any generic thoughts. Problems & errors; -Dell diagnostics finds no problems -Dell resource CD checks the device as being on the system, but upon driver install direct from the factory CD it says "string SIGMATEL_ERROR_UpdateDriverForPnPDevices was not found in string table. -Upon installation of the drivers downloaded from Sigmatel error is "Device not present, restart the system to detect". Upon restart same error. -In system devices 'multimedia audio controler' is present but however has a yellow triangle with an exclaimation mark in it. -'Everest'; a program which detects computer parts and settings lists my sound card as 'intel82801 DB(M) ICH4(-M) AC97 Audio Controllor A1 So I have no clue what all this means but its as much info as I can gather. Random thoughts and helpfull comments appreciated. Thanks in advance, Slowpid. P.S. - I try my best to work it out before asking and if I was home I would just call DELL, from Africa however its nearly impossible and I need the sound to a.)Finaly Watch 'Advent Children' and more importantly: B.)Study my Arabic homework and teach my roommate to sing along to some USED or BOWIE! Thanks again. -Slowpid

I had a HUGE issue this weekend with my computer. After repairing Windwos like 3 times and installing/uninstalling SP2 like 6 times I finally got everything back to normal, a few of my issues were no USB and no Sound. You may not want to, or have the CD to repaire you whole windows install, but if you've got everyhting backed up (for safety) you may want to just try to repaire all of Windows.

It would be really hard to re-install windows at this point because I would have to get everything for CSC again which is a pain in the ASS at this school with their wierd and crazy setup here.

Are you talking about windows recovery consol? What would I do with that? I'll look it up in google but does anyone have any good directions, starting point or overarching idea of what or how it would do?

Thanks Mr. Hampster; appreciate the help and good job on getting your Comp going.

Oh toolmaker your awsome. Those look like they will work but ALL links are broken or something. I'm looking it up on google for alt. sites but so far 6 have the same problem 'cannot find page' or something of the sort. Anyways, i'll keep at it and keep checking for any more opinions or advice. Thanks tons for the effort and possible solution. rating up up for both of you.

Try replacing it with other sound card. Maybe the hardware has gone bad.

The easiest (probably overkill) way I can think of to see if it actually works is to try a linux livecd such as knoppix. This may or may not be feasable depending on your internet connection speed, and access to cd writers.

Also if you're running windows 98, you really need to upgrade. win98 + hardware = BSOD.

offtopic: AC97 driver hell on windows 98 is what made me switch to linux.
