Whenever I use this function I always get the GL_INVALID_OPERATION value returned. Even at the very beginning of the application I will repeatedly call the function and print out the return value but I always get GL_INVALID_OPERATION. Is the call itself causing the error? After the first call isn’t the flag supposed to be set to GL_NO_ERROR?

Any function related to OpenGL requires a valid and active rendering context. Without it, nothing will work, and you should not trust any return values. I believe glGetError on Windows always returns GL_INVALID_OPERATION when the function is not attached to a particular implementation, which occurs at the point where the rendering context is made active.

Thanks, that has also explained another problem I've been having.
