DirectX Performance question

Until now I have been working on an ancient computer ( PIII, 8 Mb Video card ). Few days ago I recived another computer: AMD Athlon 2200+, 768 RAM, Geforce2 MX/MX 400 with 64 Mb. I agree there is still place for better, but that is another discution. The problem is that I am a little disappointed on what FPS rates I recive in my game builds. With a simple framework that has only a couple of polys (four piramides) I recive around 500 FPS. When I plug in the terrain engine ( it displays a textured terrain mesh that has 32768 triangles) the FPS rate drops to 100 - 120. Can you guys post what FPS rates you get in a blank DirectX screen ( with no poly or with a very small number of poly rendered)? I am aware that the FPS rate depends on 1000+ factors. Still I would like to have at least a general idea on what FPS rates you get in your projects. When you reply please mention you system configuration. Thanks. On my machine (AMD 2600, 128Mb GeForce 4 Ti 4400), Calling Clear(), BeginScene(), EndScene() and Present() in a loop, I usually get around 1200fps. But that really doesn't mean anything.
Your bottleneck is definitely your graphics card. The GeForce 2 MX is designed to be cheap and run things reasonably well. Basically, it's a budget card, like the GeForce FX 5200.

You can pick up a GeForce FX 5200 (Although if I were you, I'd go for something a little better like a 5600) for around £30 ($60), and that should give you a noticible speed increase. Plus, it lets you play with shaders [smile]

GeForce 2 MX is a peice of crap much like the MX 4000 and the FX 5200. I personally wouldn't reccomend either. I don't know if you are a rich or a poorer person, but if you have the money, I reccomend you getting something like a FX 5950, those are pretty good. Most of Nvidia's FX cards IMO weren't very good, even a GeForce 4/Ti out-perfomes my crappy 5200. Also, think that ATI cards have better DirectX performance.

Blank screen. GeForce6800Ultra: ~6000FPS (fullscreen) ~4000FPS (windowed)
I don't remember with my GeForce4Ti4200, but I think it was around 1500.
