KDE is ginormous, so probably a while. If you're compiling it, it'll probably take all day. After the several hundred meg download.
If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.

Your problem is that your "emerge kde" causes ALL components of KDE to be compiled.

You can do the following to only get what you need:

"emerge kdebase kdenetwork"

This obviously only emerges those two components. There are A LOT of kde components.

Give it a day or so. If you're compiling X, KDE, openoffice, things like that..try and do it overnight ;)

Or you can be like me, set the machine to compile everything and then go on vacation.

This was a really good idea until when I got back... there was an error message that stopped the script about 1/8th of the way through :(

ok, thanks... btw, is there any real advantage in compiling kde, instead of using the precompiled binaries ?

They'll be optimized for your machine, so they'll be slightly better on CPU. I still use precompiled binaries most of the time myself.

Don't worry it took my about 3 days of solid compiling to get a working system. I'm using Arch now, much faster to install, and the package manager (pacman) is pretty nice aswell. Total time to make system usable, and gameable - 3 hours. In gentoo - 3 days, then about 2 weeks of tuning up. Gentoo is pretty damn good if you have the time still! Should have went for fluxbox or xfce though, not KDE. Fluxbox is what I use on my system, excellent for dual monitors aswell.
