I downloaded Wings3D as being recommended as one of the simplest free 3D packages for a non-modeller to easily knock up some rough models. Unfortunately it doesn't export to .X format, which is a neccesity for me. Is there a plugin available? If not, which is the simplest free modelling program which can read & export .X files? Many thanks.

From previous research, Blender comes up as being very powerful, but not in the least intuitive. I'm not a modeller and have no desire to be. I am not prepared to invest time learning a complex interface to do simple things when a less powerful but simpler application could easily let me do what I want. I don't need any advanced features.

I can see this easily being derailed into Blender fans trying to convince me how good it is, and easy to use once you put in the time. I don't deny that, but please humour me by suggesting a "Modeller for idiots" which has a .X plugin.

I don't want to do much more than create simple primitives (boxes, cones, spheres etc), join them together and tweak the vertices a bit, apply one or two texture coordinate sets, and set material properties.

Thanks!

In wings, export to obj then use a converter. Blender may do the job. You may want to try Deled too. It's primarily a level editor, but you can model objects very easily with it, much easier than to use than wings3D. I believe it exports to .x

Yes it does according to the website. Since I've ot actually used Wings I'll lose no time installing and trying Deled - it looks like what I'm after. Thanks!

BTW - I managed to rate you to over the 1400 barrier, if you care!
