I'm currently in the making of a space fighting game, but I haven't really played any flight simulators seriously. I need to know from any gamers how the "locking target" process works. What I remember by playing a little some years ago, is that I have to align some targets on my screen, but what are they? In your typical fighting flight sim, what are the most basic indications on the screen that make locking possible and what do they represent?

Why not just download a game and play it to find out? Theres lots of freeware flight sim games. They arent that great, but theyre there.

well...arguably one of the most realistic flight simulators is Falcon 4.0..which simulates the F16 pretty much exactly.

Firstly there are two types of missiles, the simplest being Infra-Red, heat seaking missles. These missles do not need aiming, they contain a heat sensor on the tip, which detects the heat from a nearby aircraft engine. When selected the missiles emit a growling noise, which starts off low when no heat source is detected, increasing to a high pitched beeping/growling when a strong source is detected and locked.

Secondly there are radar guided missiles. With these it is up to the pilot to select and designate the target. A radar display is shown along with small blips to represent the targets. A cursor is displayed, looking like a pair of square brackets about one space apart. (aka " [ ] ") Simply move the cursors over the blip and press a select button, to lock the target on the radar, the info is then sent to the missle which using its own onboard radar then ties to idntify the target

Let me know if you need anything else!
