Im currently doing a research project on the subject of DR(Digital Rights). I need to find out all the pros & cons on this subject. My opinion, I think this whole DR enactment (plus the Patriot Act) is just stupid. DR combined with the Patriot Act makes all Internet users possible suspects/criminals. Your opinion??

Digital Rights are vital to all computer users, because without them the computer industry could not exist as it does today. While the current situation definitely isn't optimal, I think eliminating digital rights completely would lead to a situation far worse than the way things currently are.

How are digital rights all that different from civil rights except in the domain they cover? Perhaps your issue is that the wrong people are given the wrong rights?

Yes exactly, I don't neccesarily feel that digital rights should be abolished; but some parts of it need change. For example, DR gives the music industry to gain the immediate info. of a particular citizen, no questions asked.

Also if you were to review the patriot act, there is some pretty scary stuff in there concerning how the government treats our privacy (example: "sneak peeks"[looksaround]). At first the patriot act seemed like a good idea, but now there is the threat that our rights might be violated.

While it's true that the DMCA has reduced barriers to subpoenas, I don't know of any instances in which this power has been used in a manner other than that for which it was intended. Any examples?

The problem is, lawmakers who pass these kinds of laws seem to want to consider only the objective reasoning behind them, throwing principle out the window. If something is absolutely horrible principle, it should not be passed period, I don't care how paractical it is/was at the time.

Thank God for organizations like the EFF.
