Hi all, we are small team which work on the FPS game project. Now we realize that some sort of source code synchronization system is necessary. Can somebody recommend any sync system which works with FTP? I tried WinCVS, but I can not to setup them correctly (apropos do WinCVS work with FTP?) By the way sorry for my not-best english. Any responce will be really appreciate.

I use VSS (Visual Source Safe) at work. Dont use it! it sucks. Bascially you want 'Configuration Management' software. Ild just google for that and see what turns up. Also try download.com for reviews and such.

If your OS can map an FTP server into a directory or drive of your computer, every file based SCM should work (like CVS, SubVersion, etc.).

CVS don't work with FTP. It uses itws own protocol to comunicate with its server. In fact I don't know any SCM that work using teh FTP protocol - it is way too limitating. Of course, this statement itself don't mean anything, since I can't know everything. Maybe someone finnaly did a SCM (software configuration management tool) that is able to use FTP as one of its communication protocol?

(edit: answer given by TrueTom before I even ask the question. I guess he have some mind reading capacities)

If FTP is your sole way of doing things, I suggest you to... find another way :) If you game will end up as beeing an open source project, you can check SourceForge and its public CVS repositories. There are also some SVN (SubVersion) based solution (Wush is not free but don't costs very much (80$ / year for an individual); it allows you to have an online private repository if you don't want to pubish your source code).

Thanks for your responses.

Our game is freeware project and is not the open source, thus we look for the no-cost solution to share files across the internet.

I have WinXP but don't know how to map the FTP server(non anonymous) into directory tree. Any help would be valuable.

Trying looking at whether you could simply have one person use WinCVS on a centralize machine with everyone else FTPing in and out of seperate directories. Don't try to come up with a way of preventing any problem that might ever occur, but rather focus on the specific problems you've had.
