why you think they wont do a g5 powerbook ?
G5 has some serious heat issues that wouldn't transfer to a laptop. The desktops are water cooled; I don't think you want a water-cooled laptop.

another thing: how is development/programming in mac os? is it as enjoyable as in win and linux (i mean, nice tools/editors/ides)?
Mac OS comes with XCode; give it a google for people's opinions.

edit: oh... and powerbook? or ibook? whats the difference?

Development is pretty good. By default (as in free programs included) you can either use XCode, which is a pretty nice IDE, but has a huge menu, or use gcc/command line tools through the terminal. I alternate between the two, depending on what kind of coding I'm doing.
PowerBook is the more powerful, more upgradeable of the two.
If you're doing any a) Image editing (i.e. photoshop), b) video editing, c) medium to intensive processing of any kind (graphics, games, etc.), you probably should opt for the PowerBook, and upgrade the RAM.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, if you are getting one soon, at least wait until next week. Rumor has it that Apple is announcing upgrades to the PowerMac and PowerBook.
Yeah, there's a pro event on the 16th.
There IS a low power version of the PPC 970, I don't know if it is going to end up in any shipping products. Current scuttlebutt is that it's going to end up in a new revision of the Mac mini. The 7440-based (G4) Powerbook machines have gone awhile since their last update so I'd bet that they're going to be updated at least once before the Intel transition (which doesn't actually ship product until 2007).
As for Powerbook/iBook differences:
* The Powerbook has a much nicer keyboard and comes with Bluetooth standard. I think it also has a nicer video card (iBook: R9550, Powerbook: Go5200 or R9700, both of which are way overdue for update).
* It also has a neat scrolling-trackpad gimmick, tilt sensor and illuminated keyboard with ambient light sensor on the 15" and above models (most of which are completely useless, but you can write games that use them if you're into that sort of thing [grin]).
* Faster bus, though I'm not sure if this is still true with the latest enhancements to the iBook line
* Faster RAM. I don't know much about DDR speed, but the PB takes PC2700 and the iBook takes PC2100. I assume these are interchangable though.
* More options. The Powerbook has widescreen options (15" and 17") and the iBook only has a 4:3 option (14.1") as well as options for a SuperDrive (combined DVD/CD burner)
If you are going to buy a Powerbook, definitely wait until the pro event. I've heard everything from an HD (1080i) Powerbook to just a clock bump and video card replacement.
I have an older (2003) Powerbook 1.33GHz 12". I carry it around in my bag almost every day, and hasn't developed any problems that I noticed.
