I downloaded the latest SDK update, the October 2005 one, and the thing doesn't want to work. It keeps telling me it can't find the d3dx9.lib file, and obviously the program won't compile. Is the October 2005 update only part of what you have to update to get DirectX working, it doesn't seem like it in the description though. Also does the October 2005 SDK only work with .Net stuff? I am trying to use Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 with it, C++. Any one have any ideas as to how I am stupid? Thanks for your help :)

Well, there's always the basic questions like "Have you checked that the lib is actually where the compiler is looking for the lib?" In other words, in your project's properties, have you specified the lib path and you have confired that the .lib is actually in the path you specify?

Assuming that, I can't think of any other reason why it wouldn't find it. I wouldn't expect there to be any problems related to MSVC6 vs. VC.NET, but I'm pretty sure if there is it would be mentioned in the DX docs or on MSDN.

The last SDK supported with Visual C++ 6 is the October 2004 SDK. Newer ones won't work.

[edit]I'm slow, but I have more info. Mwahaha.[/edit]

The DirectX SDK hasn't been officially working with VC++6 for quite a while now. I believe there were some versions that did happen to work, but not all of them do, and you can't really depend on them accidentally working either. I believe the last one to officially work with VC++6 was the Version 9.0c 2004 October Update, or round about that time. Here is the link to that SDK.

Though many will recommend that you upgrade your compiler/IDE. The Express Editions of the VS 2005 betas are available for free currently, and will only cost around $50 (per language, if bought individually, I think) when they're released less than a month from now.

My understanding is that the free beta versions are "time bombed" to stop working when the final release hits the shops. As of current, you could get a month long demo out of them, but thats about it [smile]

I've heard people recommend the code::blocks IDE and the VC2003 Toolkit (A guide to using it from the command line). Maybe it's worth checking that one out if you can't afford the newer VS2005 tools [smile]

Thanks for all the help guys. I changed it to the 2004 October version, and now it works fine.
