The any key is the spacebar, but programmers at Microsoft were confused and through any key really ment any key and now we have to support this archaic "standard".

The any key isn't the spacebar, it's the return key. That's why on old programs you see "Hit return to continue" or "Press enter to continue".

You'll notice that the FAQ got modified a year later. Apparently, the original author got the answer wrong.
