I am writing a ASM IDE for the HCS12 microcontroller. I need to run and executable from the program. I am planning on using exec() function, I want the text output from ASM12.exe to be displayed in an editbox control. How can I get this text.

Is the text outputted from ASM12.exe on stdout or stderr or by some other method?

Assuming you're on windows, If ASM12.exe writes to standard output, you should be able to redirect it to a handle using CreateProcess. Then you can do a ReadFile and grab its output. Here's an MSDN article for you.
