I'm working on an animation player for the ti-89. A program on the computer converts the bitmap frames into a calculator format, then a program on the calculator reads those files. The only thing is that, if I write data into the last bit (or first?) of a char, the calculator doesn't recognize the file anymore. Is there some general reason why it wouldn't let me do this? Maybe something to do with signed and unsigned formats? char b=0; //turn all bits to 0 b|=128; //causes problems Until then: (example from cad comic)

Try using 'unsigned char' instead of 'char'. If a 'char' is an 8-bit signed type (as it typically is on PCs), then b|=128 would set the number to (-128 + b) (presuming 2s complement representation) and that would probably mess up the rest of your calculations.
