I might want to create a game that has many ideas and elements of an older game. The names will be different, but there might be some similar things in the concept of the game. Is there a problem doing something like this? or I should not worry about it at all? Like when warcraft was done after dune2. However, the game was set in a fantasy mediveal time and so would my own game, is there a problem with that? Thanks in advance.

Ideas are not protected by IP laws so you can do a similar game based on the same idea provided you don't copy actual elements from the game such as names, level designs, code, sounds, graphics. The example you gave (Warcraft Vs DuneII) was a good example of this in action.

Just use different names, levels, and such. The storyline should also be a little different. I wouldn't want to follow it word by word. Ideas can be the same though. If you can't come close enough to what you want by doing that, I'd say look into making a mod for the game you want to take ideas from if it is possible.

About the mod, it's a game from about 1990!
Thanks for the replies.
