So there is no way to find out who has rated you negatively? Sometime in the past 24 hours, someone gave me the lowest rating you can give... and I can't figure out why :) I looked at all the posts I have made in the last week, and every one of them has been helpful/kind/etc. I'm just curious, because it would be nice to talk to this person and see how I may have offended them. So there is no way to do this? -dbh

No, there isn't.

Seriously, look at it this way.

Worrying about somebody who rated you down is like if you were driving on the highway, and somebody 4 lanes over sailed past you doing 110 MPH, and gave you a really dirty look.

And then you went home and started asking "Is there any way to find out who gave me a dirty look on the highway and why? I dont understand"

Nope, that was done so that retaliation downgrading didn't occur among other reasons.
Usually posting anything about your ratings (especially about why you were rated down) will only cause your rating to plummet. However, I have hope for you that your rating will not be affected and that maybe someone will contact you.

Cheers

I figured as much, just thought it was a low blow. For a community like this that thrives on the generosity of the experienced, it sure isn't wise to turn away people willing to give up some of their valuable time to help.

Anyway, thanks for confirming what I thought :)

Most internet communities are finely tuned instruments of expertise and humor tempered with extreme brutality. Best to toughen up and let slide.

Ah. if only it was a rating. You have as much chance of finding out as I have of finding out who ding'd my brand new car on Sunday. I purchased a brand spanking new car Sunday, and Monday it gets scratched by some goddam inconsiderate ahole's car door in a parking lot. The only thing you can do is go on your way I guess...

Try looking through your posts for the last 24 hours, find the one thread where you had a disagreement with a person then pm the person to see if they did rate you down. Youd be surprised at the petty things people can get dinged for around here :D

And whatever you do, don't support Bush in any way shape or fashion on any topic at all. Don't even defend him against rediculous claims.

Edit: It's better just to avoid the lounge all together.

You could put forward a suggestion in GDNet: Comments, Suggestions and Ideas. It's unlikely that you'll get them to show who's rated you down, but it might be possible to get a change in the rating form to allow anonymous critique.

Ratings = meaningless garbage

The rating system is stupid. Your post in "OpenGL" forum shouldn't be taken as seriously because you have a low rating caused by a disagreement in the Lounge over a Star Trek episode? People who worry about their ratings deserved to be rated down.

I suppose you're right at that. Thanks for the comments, I think I'm going to go get some coffee ;)

Not in this forum they don't. The rating system does not exist to give an indication of a user's opinion about themselves, but rather how the community feels towards them. As in real life, there are people in this community that are (overly, and possibly unecessarily) concerned with their self-image. That's fine, and as far as ratings go, totally irrelavent from my point of view. I don't judge a person's friendliness or helpfulness based on their own neuroticism, and the Forum FAQ says you shouldn't either.

Tips I learned early on...

1. DO NOT POST YOUR VEIWS IN A EXTREME MANNER! ahem...
2. If you belive anything, don't tell others thier a waste of humanity for not agreeing with you
3. Don't have a political side... the lounge is a flame war of this stuff... don't get involved, don't be liberal or conservative, be moderate. Don't be extreme left or right
4. Don't call woman who@res
5. The most important tip of all... quit the lounge =/

took me like 3 months to dig myself out of the 900's

Unless you are me, don't complain about ratings. For some reason, when I complain about them I do not get my rating score decreased (although I do suspect I will get it lowered quite a bit by posting this message).

Basically, if you don't want a rating penalty, do not disagree with anyone here, as there are many idiots who will take any divergent point of view as a personal attack, so they have to retaliate by reducing your rating.

In general, posting in the Lounge tends to lower one's rating, whereas posting in other forums tends to raise one's rating. Keep that in mind.
