GMail Notifier problem

Has anyone else been having problems with GMail notifier? If I hover my mouse over it, it says "Offline", and it never alerts me of new mail. I've googled for this problem, and there's been a couple of people having it, but their solutions don't seem to work for me. It was working fine on my old version of Windows (Win2k), but not on my new install (WinXP SP2). I'm logged in as an administrator all the time, so I don't think it's a permissions issue. I've tried adding gmail.com, google.com and gmail.google.com to my trusted sites and setting the security settings to auto log me in. Still no luck. I can still double click on the icon in the system tray, and it takes me straight to my inbox, not the login screen, so I really don't know what's going on. Anyone got any suggestions? Cheers, Steve

Could it be the SP2 built in firewall? It's enabled by default, so, you might have to either set an exception to allow the specific application, or disable it completely.

Hope this helps :).

Nope, I've disabled the firewall. Well, I've got it set to "Not monitored". Disabling it causes Windows to shout at me constantly.

Open security center from Control Panels, on the left side you'll see "Change how security center alerts me" (or whatever it is). Uncheck Windows Firewall.. then disable the firewall, it should no longer alert you.

Ah, nice. Thanks.

The GMail Notifier still says "Offline" though :(

I've only seen it at my work where the IS department uses websense to block some sites. Online email happens to be one of them, so the GMail notifier always says offline:)

As far as I know, it's never worked on my XP install. I don't have anything interesting installed, no firewalls (I'm behind a router), no anti-spyware stuff. The only thing of interest is Norton Antivirus 2003, which shouldn't matter at all...

EDIT: Ok, so I ran Ethereal, to see if anything exciting is happening. It seems that no packets are being sent from the notifier when it starts up or I do "Check mail now". Any ideas?

Thanks for the replies so far.

Sounds to me like the notifier is maybe being port blocked.

Quite why? I couldn't tell you.

Well, I don't see why that would be, since all other ports are fine for outgoing TCP/IP. Also, I believe Ethereal captures packets as they enter/leave the network card, so even if it was getting port blocked, it must be a software problem.

I'll try reinstalling the notifier (from a new download) and see if that helps at all.

EDIT: Ok, I reinstalled it, and ran Ethereal while I was doing so. It managed to check for a new version of the notifier, but it still says "Offline"...

Well, that was odd. It's working now. I just cleared all of my history, cache, saved form information and saved passwords. And now it's magically working...
