Robots are taking over the world!!! But seriously, there is no way we would have a robot dictator in fourty - fifty years is there? The whole reasoning of robots with 'pure' intellect is flawed, isn't it? How would such a thing be possible if computers can't be random? (!)Note to mods: I wan't sure whether I should put this in the AI section if I am not seeking help to proggram AI.(!)

Ignoring the topic of robot takeover, did anything ever come of this?. I remember reading that article when it was published and wonder what its effects have been (if any at all).

i have seen that so many times, something obviously was not right, and I would really like to know what it is, it could be a radio, but frankly, I saw nothing going to his ear, and I dont think it would be that big, especially when commercially you can get ones that fit in your ear with no wires and a 300 meter amplifyer in your pocket that is small.

call me stupid, but I personally think it may be some sort of secret tech.... although I know radio is more plausible!

Is that supposed to be a batterie pack or what?

I forget what the consensus was, but I think it was like a radio or something.

In all reality, it was probably a bullet-proof vest. My image was a joke, people, not a conspiracy theory.

Don't you all know that the bump is the wire to the Mothership? sigh..

But, frankly, yes, in let's say 500- 1000 ys, IMHO, this planet will be overseen by a central computer. :D And that computer can rewrite it's own software and keep on perfecting itself until it's perfect. Note, that super computers will NOT take part in any human communities, because it has no inspiration, will, desires etc. , but it will do what it's best at: taking logical steps to make all things safe and in order. ^_^

Blech. Not bloody likely. Every few months, some hapless researcher mentions AI to some tech reporter, and the reporter jumps all over it. Kurzweil's self-serving, starry-eyed predictions don't help either. The fact is, there's nothing new under the sun. Playing soccer, monitoring for bank fraud, sizing blue jeans... these are all domain-specific applications of AI. The gulf between soccer and rational thought is just as big as it was twenty years ago.

Why do you believe that intellect requires randomness? Or that humans have any more capacity for randomness than computers?

Er, don't answer that second one if the answer involves Jesus. [wink]

I think, in my humble opinion, that taking over the world would be possible if computers are programmed to have a certain set of rules -- human self-preservation. It does not have to be random at all.

Edit: It might take longer to have a robot take over the world, but it may come.

For example, in one of my books about BEAM robotics, robots should have the following rules so they can be independent.
(1)Protect thy ass.
(2)Feed thy ass.
(3)Move thy ass to a better real estate.

Sounds like human tendencies to me, and since we are trying to make robots mimic human motion, why not add in the thought process as well? Less money wasted on repairs, upgrading, and so on.

Would it not be nice if as soon as your program found a bug in itself, it would patch itself and relay a message to other copies to patch theirselves as well?

Which is why I have invested my hard-earned cash into These

Well actually the LEDs, but you get the picture.

I'm not so much in favor of having a robot dictator.
I'm more in favor of having me be the dictator and using the robots to keep the rest of you in line.

I agree. As I see it, the difference in AI research was that before the "AI Winter" there was still hope that we would build the "perfect" AI system that would mimic (or surpass) human intelligence. But afterwards, researchers (in general) are more focused on achieving practical results. We've had good results in specific domains, such as the DARPA challenge. But we still haven't got an A.I. system that's as adaptable as a toddler to a huge range of tasks. I don't think we have to worry about an A.I. world dictatorship for some time yet.

Besides, even if we do get one, if we program it for benevolence the world would end up better than what we've presently got right now [wink].

I'm waiting for the fanatical round ball football fans to read that one [grin].

People can't program a computer 100 correctly.. they never will. All we can do is to make the physical equipment (hardware) available, so that a super fast comp can program/modify/adjust itself correctly. And sustain itself and be 100 percent reliable. When the hardware is ready, this will be a natural shift in living, i'm convinced. Everyone can see that the small signs are there. And they go really fast.
