currently i'm in the process of checking out various normal map generation tools. i checked out nvidia melody and ati nmf. i also found some references about an ORB project (open render bump), which should also provide good results. however, the project homepage cannot be found and while i tried to search the net for an archived version i could not find one. so i was hoping perhaps someone here has it and could provide link for it. would be very gratful... as i found out, the process of generating normal map can be quite nasty, due the ray casting issues. complex objects should be divided to avoid socalled seams, but on the other hand this causes nasty lines. so, extra hand painting (fixing) is also necesary. any tips on how to avoid this?

^^ call me "google master" ^^

A lot of links provided by google or other search tools or not up to date, but the website still exists. So go back to the main page, and navigate through the website (if it still exists) to find where they put the page you were looking for. That's what I did ^^
