Hi, after a few days of research I've decided to use OpenGL as my graphics library. I believe there's no problem if I just use the Windows API for user input right? So how about sounds, what API should I use? I know you can already get a bundle of these features with gamr programming libraries such as allegro and directx but I would really like to stick with opengl right now... 1. Graphics - OpenGL 2. User Input - WinAPI 3. Sound - ? 4. Network - Winsock(not really in need right now though...) 6. IDE - DevC++ I just wanted to make sure I'm equiped with the right tools to get started with... Thanks guys! ;)

Hello,

Sound: bass, fmod, audiere
Network: Hawknl or Raknet are good libraries.
Ide: code::blocks is a good alternative to DevC++ - it will allow you to use the free Microsoft compiler pack.

If you use OpenGL as your API, I suggest you to dig into SDL - it will handle the input, the sound, the network, and the program init for you, so you'll just have to tackle with the actual game code ;)

My suggestion would be to think of what's really needed in your application. If you're planning on making a 2D game with simple rotations, minimal transparencies, etc, I'd take a look at SDL as opposed to OpenGL. It's simpler to use and easier to learn. If you don't need networking in your game, then don't put networking in your game. Keep your goals set and keep tabs on them whenever you work on your project. SDL actually is very nice when working with OpenGL as it manages window creation and user input for you. Good luck with it and keep us posted with your progress!
