Does this sentence sound correct to you? All monies received will go to breast cancer research. I may have been schooled in Kentucky, but wouldn't you just use the word monies when talking about money from different countries together? [Edited by - thomashun on October 29, 2005 9:35:28 PM]

I've heard it used on popular financial news programs like CNBC unfortunately.

moneys/monies. It is just the plural of money

-edit- Oh, should be "received" not "recieved"

Monies applies when you're distinguishing between different sources or kinds of money: "The Sarbanes-Oxley bill imposes tighter regulations on corporate monies." It's usually a substitute or synonym for the words funds or income, and you generally don't hear it outside of politics or finance.

It's never correct to substitute "monies" when you're referring to the mass noun form of money, as in the following example:

Correct: "Does everyone have enough money for the bus?"
Wrong: "Does everyone have enough monies for the bus?"

It the same thing with persons and people. Imagine some idiot hearing a warning over the airport speaker about taking bags from unknown "people". Then a single "person" walks up and asks him to take a bag. Since the warning talks about plural people, he takes it and blows himself up cuz it's really a bomb. That's why they use that form. It refers to indivduals, groups of people, multiple separate groups of individuals, and separate groups of people all at once.
