How come when I try to reply to the topic "Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer", it just takes me back to the forum index?
I suspect that the thread has been retired.
Then how come it says "You may post replies" at the bottom?

That means you can post replies in non-retired threads (the stuff in that box isn't thread-specific). I believe it's there to show that a mod or staff member hasn't revoked your privilege to reply.

Retiered...What does that mean in a thread context?
After a certain amount of time, threads get closed automatically. The exact amount of time is determined on a per-forum basis, and I suspect it's disabled all together in a few.

Indeed. This is a feature to prevent people from "necroing" old threads where the discussion has likely ended. After a certain amount of time with no replies (the time is set on a per-forum basis), a thread will become retired. Retired threads are indicated within the thread listing by a tombstone icon, but unfortunately there isn't any indication within the threads themselves at the current time other than the fact that replying will take you back to the forum index.
If you really want to bring up an old topic, you have two options:
- Contact the moderator of that particular forum via PM and ask nicely; we can bring retired threads back. Providing a link to the thread to make it easy for us will increase your chances, we might not bother if we're expected to search for it ourselves.
- Post a new thread, explain at the top that it follows on from an old one, and provide a link.
Do keep in mind when bringing up an old topic that we retire them for a reason - we don't want every thread around the forums brought back up constantly.

Site FAQ: Why can't I reply to this thread?
Granted, it is annoying when you go to click Post Reply, and the thread is retired without you realising in some cases.
It would be nice to have a Retired button that's unclickable (like the Closed button), I've raised that before. It would mean we know instantly.

Indeed, or at least some indication from within the thread. There's a lot going on behind the scenes at the moment, so we won't be seeing anything anytime soon, but I'll be sure to bring this up again.
