hi im doing an article on http://www.gotfrag.com (http://hardware.gotfrag.com) about the history, importance, and reason why the q3 engine was such a success, if anyone has any good sources for technical information, please post them. thanks.

If you want lots of info, then get the engine itself and dissect it.

does anybody know why the engine was so important, i understand that its easy to use to write mods/games etc. but like how it was revolutionary, how its different than the rest? thanks

I think from a technical standpoint it wasn't much different to Quake 1 and 2. It was fast and looked good IMHO compared to other engines at the time (mainly Unreal). Quake 2 used a similar model format, pretty much the same level construction method apart from Bezier surfaces and had coloured lighting. Quake 3 did have a different approach to AI navigation and I think pretty much beat even Quake 1 and 2 hands down as far as moddability was concerned.

Quake 3 was where ID started pulling material and shader defs out of the engine and putting them into scripts that artists could tweak and then load dynamically without an engine recompile.

This greatly spead up development because it meant that artists no longer had to recompile the egine or game to see their changes. Just modify a text script and run again.
