I started this project the first day of computer science. They told us we where using Java, I figured "Is there a better way to familiarize yourself with a language than to write an Asteroids clone?" Platforms: (only the ones tested on) - Windows 98/ME, Windows XP - Fedora Core 4, Mandriva 10.2 Minimal Requirements: (lowest system tested on which worked) (this results in a lot of lag so I recommend higher) - P2 233mhz - 32mb Ram Bugs: - Sometimes title screen to game start transition is flawed causing the game to begin with already fragmented Asteroids. A simple fix is to restart the game. - Post any bug finds here please or email me at shinHalsafar@shaw.ca MAJOR BUG: (THIS ONE SUCKS!!) - If you destroy a BIG Asteroid at the edge of the screen its fragments may end up lost in space outside the screen and never wrap to the other side. This will cause your level to never end with no way around it but to restart. This bug is what prolonged the release and what will probably kill the fun for someone if it happens to them. However it rarely occurs and shouldn't be worried about, don't be disappointed if it does, its just Asteroids. ------------------ Running the game ------------------ - Download the package below (a zip file) - Unzip it into a directory - Make sure you have a JVM installed which is up to date (1.5) - Go to your shell or command prompt and type: - 'java Asteroids' - Much like you run your own programs. ------------------ Controls ------------------ ArrowKeys Up - Thruster ArrowKeys Left/Right - Rotate SpaceBar - Shoot Enter - Begin game and Pause during game Escape - Quit the game ------------------ Information on the development of the game ------------------ - Using Java2D Library - Cross-platform was a major importance so no resolution changes are made as X11 won't accept that. Instead an AffineMatrix is applied so on all systems regardless of there screen the game will look the same. - Java and sound don't get a long to well. Sound quality and lag is a problem with Linux due to Alsa drivers but on Windows its all fine. ----------------------- The download -- Current Version 0.90 ----------------------- http://members.shaw.ca/dark_angels/Asteroid.zip Asteroids 0.90 ----------------------- Future Additions (If people want to play) ----------------------- - Optimization!! The game is far from optimized but that is always the LAST step in game development. - 2 Player Cooperative (already implimented mostly just not finished) - Music - HYPERSPACE BUTTON (even tho that was always useless in Asteroids) ----------------------- Contact Me ----------------------- - Please leave some feedback! Specifically ideas on how to fix the MajorBug! If you have an ultimate screen wrapping algorythm please share. - If you feel there should be any improvements. - Report a undiscussed bug (include OS, System Specs). - If you feel you may benefit from seeing the source code. - If you enjoyed the game and want to see more of my games :) E-Mail: shinHalsafar@shaw.ca Msn: shinHalsafar@hotmail.com Thanks for Playing, Halsafar

I also created an asteroids style applet to get used to Java. This was 2 or so years ago, and a link is here.

Unfortunately I don't have a java compiler with me at the moment so I couldn't test out your game.

You just need to be able to run the *.class files within the zip.
I'm on Linux right now and I've never been able to get it to load up Java Applets.
I'll try yours once I log into a windows box.

i like it.

( just now actually ) im starting to turn my bunch of SDL wrappers and bits of a minimalistic 2d game/network engine into a networked asteroids clone.

its a expletive to make, but it'll be fun when its done

good luck with your project...
