Wow, I had no idea these things are actually happening. Does america host any?
Anyone here ever compete in one?

How can you not know about Quake Con?

I don't normaly play online, I hate the monthly fees so my only online games were: Everquest(and the first two expansions), Dark age of Camelot, Diablo 2, Shadowbane, and age of empires expansion: the rise of rome. In short, no FPS online, and most of my gaming is console-ish(without Live). I love LAN games better, so I can see who I am snipping and who I was fragged by. I love FPS's almost as much as the next guy but I don't play online too much do too the TKers and people with names like 'FU2H*LL' 'FHGFJSAF' and 'r0x0rs9000'. But these sound cool as the person you are versing is right across from you, or atleast in the same room.

There's Evo2k, a fighting game tournament. You may have seen this cool video from it.

Cool, but 20-5 JAPAN WINS? We really suck don't we? [smile] So is there 'official' teams, or do people decide to put together a team to compete?

There aren't any official teams, just people deciding to join together for a specific game. Japan is generally better than the US because of their culture. Playing video games is more popular there, so they'll produce more players.

Some teams are sponsered (more sponsers lately than back when I was in college). As I remember it, you either buy your way in, or if you're good enough, you're given a free ticket to get in.

Well, it's not really as simple as that, because they just won't let any joe schmo in. Try going to several LAN parties, get good enough to compete at the highest levels of CAL, etc.

But you have to remember, these are not your normal pub players you're facing. These people are frickin good, to the point that imho, 99% of people seeing them would consider them using cheats of some sort.

General rule of thumb. If you go to LAN parties, and don't place first 3/4 times, most likely you're not good enough to compete in these competitions. Remember, to many people who go to these competitions, it's a job for them. They play 12+ hours a day. They know every secret, every tactic, etc.

I know I have almost absulutely no chance of getting into one, nor do I want to. I just thought it would be cool to compete in a free huge lan game around California. Say in halo 2? I wouldn't want to do that as a job and would prefer game development, but it would be nice for a local 200 player deathmatch or team matches. I have only played lan FPS's of four on four. Is there a moving mini gathering lan of under 250 players that travel the country and charge, say, fifty to sixty dolors for an entry fee with a few multiple lan game choices? If not, someone should make one. They could make great money of it I would think. It would take an initiual investment of about $500,000 for the computers plus staff wages. So you would need an invester like microsoft. You would make almost $12,500 a day each day you hold one. You could hold nine or ten a month but would lose money due to traveling... Okay, so you wouldn't make so much, but it would be cool if microsoft did a traveling xbox2 super-lan every now and then.

I would love to do some kind of Halo 2 tourney. I'm good, though probably not top 10%. It's difficult to tell on live, since I can kick the crap out of a lot of people, but it always seems like there are mountains of people who are better than me. I'd like to think that I'm to the point that the game has become a lot less accuracy and power weapon centered and more tactical. The other stuff is just natural these days. Makes for some interesting looking battles.

I am not the best player I might even be the worst, I can play pretty well but as I only fought people I know, I am not so sure how I would hold up against others. It would be fun to battle others though, and watch their facial expressions when something happens.

Starcraft is huge in South Korea right now. Warcraft III is rising but due to that fact that it isn't Starcraft, it isn't doing as well.

Slashdot had a story the other day about a person making a six figure income off of some game. His screen name was something like Fata1ty or something like that.

Yep, it's Fatal1ty though I think he had to win competitions for more then one game.

That's me and my team winning the biggest UK LAN. Go me! I'm the little guy second from left, oh and I'm 20 years old believe it or not.

EDIT: I mustn't forget the tall guy on the right is the HaloPC World Champion. He'll love me for mentioning that :)

EDIT2: This is for Counter Strike: Source.

There were about 1000 people playing in all sorts of tournaments. There were 22 teams of 5 for the Counter Strike: Source tournament from all around the UK. There was a £65 entrance fee. If you are interested in computer games it is a whole lot of fun.

I think the best part of the entire tournament was in the final of our tournament, the game was being shown downstairs on a big screen but on a 90 second delay. So after we won the final we ran downstairs and cheered even though we knew we had already won :)

It's going well it is a lot of fun and there weren't any major problems. I play for intrinsic, and I use the nick i|Sp00n. Come join us in IRC #intrinsic on QuakeNet.

I enjoy playing Starcraft occasionally because of the strategy that is involved in the game, but I do not play the game often enough to compete with the pros. One thing that I am really good at playing is practically every puzzle game that has ever been made. Does anyone know if they are tournaments for games like Puzzle Fighter, Doctor Mario, Tetris, or Columns?
