Well, I''ve heard people talking about assembly languages, but just what are they? It seems as though it''s pretty vital, I mean, I''ve read some applications from companies and almost all of them require assembly lanugages. Can anyone tell me what they an assembly language is and give me some examples? Thanks.

Assembly is a language just like C++ or Visual Basic. Assembly gives you direct control of the hardware or how processes are carried out. A little knowledge of assembly is good, but not much is needed since most compilers optimize some code with ams anyways,

Go here and scroll to the bottom of the list. There are tons of Assembly articles here on GameDev

Oh, that''s cool then since I already know VB (along with C etc.). Thanks, guys.

Well, not quitelike C or VB. Machine code is the language of computers. Basically, machine code is binary code. Assembly is translated into machine code by an Assembler, almost like a compiler compilers into assembly. Assembly requires much more knowledge of the inards of a computer, and I would recommend learning Assembly, at least for the x86 processor series.

For example, a for loop in C:

for (i = 0; i < foo; i++)
{
// etc.
}

A for loop in Asm:

loop1:
inc i ; same as i++
cmp i, foo; compare i to foo
jge loop ; basically, a goto that says "Jump if i is greater than foo"

You can find many resources for asm on the web, but assembly isnt used as much in code, considering compilers do alot of optimizations, but DOOM and other games of old, made extensive use of it.
