Haha. [lol]

I saw a commercial a while back with a car driving along winding roads in peaceful meadows which did something very similar.

There are too many of them out there, and they generally don't really do enough to ensure it'll be unexpected.

I think I might take a shot at making one that'll actually be effective more often as an experiment sometime.

One way of doing it that I have not seen yet is in the actual loading screen for the flash animation itself. So it starts going 10%, 20%, then at about 50% is does the scream thing.

That was the first idea that occured to me as well. Then I realised that for best effect you need to get them to turn up the volume as well. I've realised I'm busy with other things, and can't really be bothered, so I may as well further explain what I was considering.

So, what we do is create a flash game. It has a loading screen, menu, some instructions, the whole deal. The website it's on even has a few screenshots on display - one of an intro sequence (I'll come back to this in a moment), and a couple of gameplay. Any sounds/music playing during those stages needs to be very quiet. Now, when the player gets around to clicking the start game button, we make the screen nice and dark, and start playing a brooding intro; quiet but tense music, and a voiceover explaining the story. This all needs to be overly quiet. Most people will presumably turn up the sound to hear it. Spring the surprise on them mid-sentence part way through this intro.

That sounds so much cooler than that thing I found... we should all get together and make that sometime. We could base it off something from GDNet...

Dang it, if I wasn't so swamped with other projects, I would start making that myself (I've been looking for an excuse to learn Flash for a while)

There's one out there thats done in a "buzzer game" style (you know the one, guide the mouse over the wire trying not to touch it), and when you get to about 75% of the way, out she pops.

This shows up definitively how much immature is the gamedev audience
posts like this get more hits than serious questions about programming
and game developing, this is a way of living that started since few here
in gamedev.
If i were the moderators and creators of the site i would introduce an
age filter.
Of course i'm going to be flooded with low ratings now, another signs of immaturity.

  • They already have an age filter (for legal reasons, though)

  • I would not appreciate it if they increased the age limit, I happen to be pretty young for one thing. Maturity is not always directly related to age.

  • The main reason it gets a lot of hits is probably because the thread name makes people curious (why did you visit this thread?)

  • I doubt this thread got more hits than, say, some of Wavinators game design topics.

  • As for your comment saying that not many people here are game developers, I would bet that's not true. Does being a game developer mean you never want nor need comic relief? Does it mean that you aren't immature?

1)Humour.

2) Any "serious" questions success of being answered depends greatly on the author's ability to ask it.

For example, I have no idea WTF this is supposed to mean. English isn't your first language, granted.

3) I haven't gone through your post history yet, but I sense just a little bitterness.

4) i) Gamedev has an age filter.

4) ii) An age filter would be meaningless in this context. However, it might be just enough to stop some talented people being able to answer your "serious questions". Think harder about this idea.

As others have mentioned, there's already an age filter of sorts in place in that we don't allow users under the age of 13. Maturity is often completely unrelated to age in any case. I know some very mature people who are very young, and conversely I know some very immature people who are significantly older.

Hardly. While there are plenty of users who are only marginally involved in game development there are a great many indie developers here, as well as a number of what you'd commonly refer to as "professionals" (I like to think that indie developers can also be quite professional). Also remember that there are some very talented people out there who are only hobbiests, and getting help from them makes it no less useful than being helped by a pro.

A well formed post about a serious topic will usually get an excellent response, and I find it odd that you think it immature for people to also want to be able to enjoy some off-topic chitchat as well. While I certainly agree that the "lounge lizard" culture of some users is very unproductive, I see a lot of very helpful users posting in this particular thread, and I think they more than deserve to have a bit of a laugh when they aren't helping out.

By the way, you don't have to press enter at the end of each line, the forum software will automatically wrap your text for you. The broken lines in your post make it somewhat more difficult to read.

I havn't seen that one. Nice idea though, that would probably be at least marginally more effective than the usual offerings.
