Hi, as some of you know I run a game review site. Well, it is good, but it isn't going anywhere with hits at the moment. So, I've decided to try and create a DVD, featuring some reviews etc of new games. Aswell as some docu work. To my question, can you recommend a decent video capture system, and how I'd go about attaching a console to the PC? Cheers

I used to run my PS2 off my monitor through my ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 pro...

There was a handy side-effect of being able to record video from my gameplay.

It might be better to get some sort of dedicated video recording equipment that takes inputs from whatever the system outputs...

Hi,

Caveat - I've never owned a console, so I don't know what type of connectors they have.

To capture to a PC:
Many upmarket videocards have S-video in ports, so you may be able to connect the video output of the console (via suitable adaptor) to the video in of your PC. The sound output connects to the line-in on your sound card. VirtualDub should be able to capture the video and audio inputs and store as a standard video file (movie maker might as well).

The other possibility is if you can beg, borrow or rent a miniDV camcorder (NB not all models have A/V input). You can connect the S-video or composite output of the console to the A/V input on the camera and use it as a Digital Video (DV) bridge. The firewire output from the camera connects to the PC input (firewire PCI card costs AU$25 - less in US). Any nonlinear video editing software will capture DV input for editing.

The VideoHelp site may be of use.

Hope this is of help

Steve

AFAIK many (most?) have s-video out, but some have ViVo ports where the s-video can input and output video.

This article(PDF) from New Egg discusses video card ports.
