i am probaly going to get a laptop or tablet pc for my birthday or christmas. so i was wondering which one is better(a tablet pc or a notebook)? i would be using it for basic stuff(internet, email, schoolwork, etc.). the reason i want a laptop or tablet pc is so, i dont have to sit at my desk just to do schoolwork or surf the net and i can do it anywhere in my house. My personal opinion is to go with a notebook. The nice big screen is nice. I take mine everywhere I go.

Edit: And I have a Dell 6000D, which I highly recommend. If you don't need the ATI X300 card, you can go with the Dell 6000. It is a great piece of electronics.

Lot's of people. I'm writing this on a Toshiba Portege convertible tablet PC. I know Gateway, Viewsonic, Acer and I believe Lenovo make them as well.

512mb is the bare minimum, I'd personally go for 1gb (well, that's what I did actually).

I'm actually in the market for getting a tablet PC myself as well. If cost is a big factor, you might want to take a look at the first two items on my thread here. If you have a bit to spend, over or around 1.5k USD, then you could get a nice one for ~$1667 that has everything that you could ever need in a tablet. It is the one I am considering, the price includes the cost of a 3 year service plan + 3 year warrenty as well.

The base model is a Toshiba Satellite R-10 and you get to select your goodies. Just as a note, do not choose the "1024MB PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM (1024MBX1) [add $400.00]" for it will drive the cost up needlessly. If you update to the other 1GB ram option, the highest CPU, and 80gbb hdd, it's $1487.20 after the savings and then you can click on the Reccomended Accessories for the additional warrenty/product plan. If I do this I'm getting the " Toshiba 3-Year ServiceExpress + 2nd/3rd Year Extended Service Plan 10% Instant Rebate [$179.10]" because of all of the avaliable drop off points for the service conveient for me.

Other than that, I have not seen that many other good deals online. Most of the major tech sites, newegg, tiger, geeks do not have anything that is comparable to buying direct from Toshiba. You can do more research if you want, but I think that the Toshiba R10 is one of the best deals avaliable right now. If anyone knows of better deals, please share! [smile]

I wish I had gotten one with an internal DVD drive, but other than that I like mine a lot.

i have a couple questions:

1) is there any difference between the toshiba satelite R10 & R15 besides that the R10 is customizable?

2)Its not good to touch regular computer screens, but are the tavle PCs made to be touched by your hands and the oil on your skin?

3) i know for slate tablet PCs they have "windows xp table PC edition", but is it recommened that you use them for regualr table PCs,too, like the "toshiba satelite R10 & R15"?

EDIT: also, i have an "ultimate moblility" magazine and it has the convertible notebooks(tablet pcs) in there and it tells you about a bunch, but also gives you the best one. the best one is the "Toshiba Portege M200"(with the little over the E`s). and i was wondering if anyone has heard anything good about this tablet pc? thanks to anyone who answers all....this questions

All tablet PCs use Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. If they didn't they wouldn't be tablet PCs; it's part of the definition. The latest version is equivalent to Windows XP SP2 plus the various bits needed to recognize pen input and so on.

I'm currently writing this post on a Toshiba Portege M200, and for the most part I'm happy with it. As mentioned, I wish I had gotten a version with a built in DVD drive, but otherwise I don't have any complaints. And there have been no bad side effects with respect to putting my hand on the screen.

I've only tried two tablet PCs. One was some godawful Compaq wad of crap, and the other was a Toshiba Portege convertible.

Neither of them have particularly spectacular graphics performance (the Compaq had integrated Intel video, and the Portege a Go5200) so don't go in expecting any kind of raw power out of tablets. I also think the software is relatively immature and it hurts your arm to carry the heavy thing around like a clipboard. I appreciated that the Portege had dual monitor support (with support for Portrait mode) though the pen didn't work on the CRT I plugged it into for obvious reasons. [grin] I got much more time with the Portege convertible; I'd like to try developing some software to use the little scroll thumb in videogames, then it would just act like a huge, obnoxiously heavy Gameboy.

I'd purchase a laptop, you can get them much faster for much cheaper and I seriously haven't found that many reasons to use a pen to take notes that isn't better served with some paper.

It's pretty useful when having meetings where the user is requesting UI changes. Print the application to the journal writer and do the markup on the screenshot. It's a real time saver if you happen to have to deal with someone who can't make up their mind on the UI details.

The scroll thing just maps to the arrow keys; you don't need to do anything special to work with it.

Of course, the primary use I have for the tablet functionality is sketching not note taking.

i do not care about the graphics as long as their average and dont look like there 20 year old graphics. and what do you mean by the software being "immature"?

REPLY TO: SiCrane

but with the Portege you can use it is a regular, old notebook or a tablet PC right?

thanks. =)
