How to draw a nice planetmap, to be used on a sphere? Something like this, but then beautiful instead:

Is the gimp good enough to draw something nice?

Gimp is the best free graphics application out there. It won't draw it for you, but it is certainly a nice tool to use to do so.

A good way to draw an actual globe map is to use ZBrush and actually digitally paint onto a globe.

I think you would need at least a bump map too to get some good looking planets.
You know, mountains, craters, defined surface features etc...

Another tool you can take a look at into using is Paint.Net. I'm not sure on how to draw a planetmap, so you can see if it has anything useful in it.
