I want to do a car simulation engine, but the question is, what should I use? BSP/PVS/Terrain engine? BSP and PVS portals obviously wont work on open spaces, and how do I do roads on a terrain?

In most racing games you drive throug a sort
of tube with a limited viewing distance.

There is very little overdraw.
So use no HSR! Make a polygon pump.

If you want, you can use PVS
(because the player normally is only in a small
part of the scene
(on the ideal driving line),
you have to calculate the PVS
only for a small volume (around the line))

I''ve heard that term just before, found it cool and wanted to use it

You need a fast way to draw only triangles near to you.
Therefor you should order your triangles along the trak,
start drawing at the player, and stop when to far away.

With not so tunnel-demo-like tracks
landscape-engines,
Portal-renderer (City)
may again be usefull
