Hey all!! When you were just starting, and you were doing all of those simple games and projects and such, how long did it take you, on average, to complete them? I''m just a little curious here, as mine is taking FOR-EH-VEERR! Thanks! The Shaz "I don''t want to be a pie... I don''t like gravy." - Babbs, Chicken Run SuperNova Games

I hope you''re looking for an average time People code in so many diferent ways and styles it just takes some people longer than others and some shorter than others. Plus there''s the whole deal whether you have more time tahn others to work on it and if you are as dedicated. I started a project two weeks ago and I already have the groundwork classes laid out. I''m expecting to take about two months since it''s just a brick-out clone. But then that''s me. Some people can code this in a month, others maybe need four months.

Well, I am making a Tetris clone right now and it has taken me about 2 months so far, and all i have right now is a bitmap on the screen, but this is because I am new to windows based programming and I needed to find articles and such on how to start, also I don''t have nearly as much time to work, I just get a chance to work on it during the weekends, so bottom line is it mostly depends on your ability level as well as how much time you have to kill.

I''ve been working on my RPG for about a year and a half now... and it will probably take at least another 6 months to complete it.

I''ve been working on an RPG for about 6 months, and I probably have about 4-6 months to go I imagine unless I start getting in the mood to code like crazy.

Well.... I guess mine HASn''t taken forever... I''ve just spent 3 weeks on it. I coded the windows and DirectDraw setup stuff in a week, then I ran into a problem and have been trying to debug it for the past two weeks. Maybe that''s why I''m losing heart with this project. A year and a half?? Wow.. that''s a lot of time, but I guess an RPG needs it. Thanks for the info. It''s interesting. How bout the rest of you? What''s your average development time?

Simple games in a day or two? And this guy is talking about as your first newbie project. I take it that does not include any graphics or sound? Or bells and whistles? Not counting a Lemonade Stand game way back in qbasic, my first real game was maybe 1 and 1/2 times as complex as a space invaders or centipede, took about 9 months. Don''t be discouraged when just starting out, it takes alot of time and effort before you really feel like you are getting anywhere.

Yeah, your first games can take quite a while. You just have to find the motivations to pull ''em out all the way to the end. *mutters something about having rewritten GDTanker 10 times*

My first game, a Tetris clone, took me 2 nights to make (cuz im that good not really) using dd. My second project, a simple spaceshooter, i worked on for every night in a month with a friend. We got alot of it done but are nowhere near finished.
It really depends on how "perfect" you want your game or program to be. Also depends on how much you know when you start out. If you have to learn the basics while you code it takes hella long. Keep it up tho... its worth it

if you know your language, api''s, sdk''s and whotnot beforehand, the game will inevitably take a lot shorter. Just remember to keep that in mind.

1-2 days is quite understandable for little basic games if you can take a few hours a day and know what you''re doing.

My first complete game took me 2 months to do. No previous experience with animation or sound.
