The best way to understand the way GUI's operate, and the way widgets work is to begin programming GUI's. I know that sounds sort of circular, and for that I am sorry. I actually learned a TON about GUI behavior from learning the C# and VB .NET system.
Basically, a GUI-Widget system consists of pictures that are dynamically drawn onto a monitor. Then certain information is passed between each widget/control by a variety of techniques. This passed information consists of messages describing what is currently happening with that control.
I am at a loss for words now :) I cannot easily describe how to do something like this. Although, I would say that you can search wikipedia.org for articles concerning the theory behind this sort of thing. You might especially be interested in the Observer pattern, which is, in my humble opinion, the best way to implement events.

Try the above link to get ya started, good luck! :)

I'd want an article about making your own GUI on let's say SDL, I know there are pre made GUI libraries and all, but I would like to know how to make your own widgets and how does the whole GUI concept works.
I know you said you're looking for info about creating a GUI with SDL, but http://www.c-unit.com/tutorials/mdirectx/ has a good 4-part series on creating a GUI system using managed directx. You may still be able to use some of the ideas presented in the articles.
When I built my own GUI for a school project, I personally used the 4 part GUI tutorials here on GameDev.

Take a look at http://openglgui.sf.net, it's simple enough to understand.
