I'm looking for a birthday gift for a (male) friend of mine. So I was thinking of getting him a pc game and this is where I need advice. I know he likes stategy games like Civilization, Age of Empires, Starcraft, and some RPG games (can't come up with any names at the moment). I haven't played many games lately, so I will have to rely on other people's opinion. So... any recommendations?

Out of all those, I'd say AOEIII. Really atmospheric, good fun, great graphics, still has all the elements of the older ones, plus some nice new touches thrown in to boost it a bit. And it's not stupidly difficult, unlike some parts of the older ones.

I played Civ4 briefly - it was boring, the graphics weren't brilliant, and it was so much more complicated than the older ones, it's definitely lost its charm. And apparently it'll lock up and crash on the majority of machines because it's hopelessly incompatible - I didn't buy it because I worried it wouldn't work on my laptop due to the Go6800 not being the same as the "real" desktop 6800. Apparently there be many a giant bug in that game, too - people say to wait for a patch.
